Introducing the New AEM-40 Audio Evidence Manager Phi Tech Part Number 9000-074

Phi Tech's new AEM-40 Audio Evidence Manager is a sophisticated, state-of-the-art digital system designed to give agents the ability to quickly redact irrelevant passages from audio evidence. No altering of the recording occurs. The redacted segments are still contained in the memory, but the system automatically skips over selected passages and continues playing audio beyond the redacted segments. This is convenient for presentation of audio evidence without the fear of irrelevant or inappropriate dialogue being introduced in a courtroom setting.

How it works

The AEM system utilizes the latest in digital recording techniques, allowing for CD-quality recording using MPEG compression standards. The information is recorded on a removable "flash" memory card. The data stays on the memory card for as long as needed; then the card can be erased and reused.

Audio is transferred from the original media (tape, DAT, etc.) to a solid-state PCMCIA memory card, barely larger than a credit card. Transfer can be made via audio inputs or direct digital code (S/PDIF) from a DAT or other compatible digital source.

Redaction points are created and edited with the front panel keys. A menu-driven display and softkey arrangement provides for accessing the unit's many functions without a confusing array of controls.

The continuous-rotation shuttle control and a softkey menu-driven GOTO command provide for instant access to any point in the recording. Headphone jacks are provided for private listening.

Redaction is accomplished by selecting the start point and an ending point of a given audio passage. As the unit is playing, it will automatically skip over any audio information within the range selected, and instantly begin playback of the audio beyond the redacted segments. An internal beeper alarm indicates when a redacted point has been encountered and skipped. Note that the audio is not removed from the recording — only skipped over.

The redact function can be disabled, allowing the user to play the entire recording. When the redact feature is disabled, the operator is warned that any audio to be played will not be redacted.

Redaction points and other operating information unique to the recording are stored on the flash memory card along with the audio. With this feature, each card will retain its programmed skipover points, eliminating the need to re-enter the points each time the card is removed and reinserted.

Features

  • Compact design - slightly larger than the DeskTop II Recorder. The system is portable with a rugged, professional appearance.

  • Long record/play time - Each system is complete with a 40 Mbyte Flash Card to allow up to 58 minutes of CD quality stereo recording at 96K bit rate, 160 minutes of high quality telephonic (voice range) audio in mono at 32K. Once you receive the unit, you are ready to load your first recordings.
  • High Performance Audio Recording - Record and reproduction is done at 48 kHz sample frequency allowing for 20 Hz to 20 kHz bandwidth at 96k bit rate with 85 dB minimum dynamic range.

  • Selectable record bit rate - 32k, 64k, 96k, 128k bits-per-second.

  • Random access - Any recorded segment can be located and played instantly.

  • Re-Recordable - Can be erased and re-recorded with no degradation in audio quality.

  • Digital and Audio Inputs/Outputs - Accepts audio recording from any standard audio or digital format.

  • Self-contained design - The system includes an internal speaker, two headphone jacks for private listening, and solid-state volume controls.

  • Flourescent Display and "Softkey" Menu pushbuttons - System management is done efficiently with a display showing menu commands and system status.

  • Continuous rotation shuttle control - quickly scans forward or backward through the recording to locate certain sections of the audio.

  • Playback pitch control - allows modifying the playback speed for improving intelligibility.

  • Up to 24 redacted segments per message.

  • Up to eight messages per card.

  • Selectable stereo/mono input.

  • Bookmarks - Allows operator to mark up to ten significant passages for instant access using the number keys.

  • Forward and reverse jog - advances or retreats the audio a few seconds at a time

  • Footswitch control for transcription - allows for playback, forward scan or reverse scan. When the Play pedal is released, the audio pointer retreats a few seconds to allow for a slight overlap.

Options include:

  • High capacity flash cards for more record time. Contact sales for pricing and availability.
  • Footswitch for transcription
